SIEMENS LAUNCHES TWO NEW MOBILE PHONES FOR INTERNET GENERATION – S35i and C35i – Siemens today launched two new mobile phones with integrated WAP 1.1 browsers at a reception in Cannes, France. The announcement, at the GSM World Congress, marks the beginning of Siemens’ aggressive strategy for 2000 to be a leader in providing integrated Internet solutions to all mobile phone users. The German electronics giant launched the S35i, its most advanced business mobile phone yet, and the C35i, tipped to set a new standard in mobile phones for predominantly private, social use. With a catalogue of features to satisfy the most demanding business user, the S35i includes a WAP 1.1 browser and integrated modem, opening the door to the world of mobile online information and business services. The Infrared Interface (IrDA) also makes the handset easily compatible with personal data assistants, such as the Siemens IC35 – The Unifier. The S35i features simple and clear text messaging with Intelligent Typing*. The user simply presses the desired letter key once, and the dictionary recognises the words the user is trying to spell, avoiding the laborious task of spelling out words on the keypad. Weighing only 99 grams, the S35i, with Siemens’ first ever integrated ariel, is one of the lightest and smallest mobile phones in its class. And with a talk time of up to 360 minutes** or a standby time of over nine days**, the phone has one of the longest battery lifetimes in its class. The S35i also comes with voice dialling, even when using a headset***. The silent alert and alarm reminder allows business users to be updated discreetly, while the integrated voice memo function on the phone allows key points to be recorded. Arranging business schedules is easier as well with the S35i’s range of office capabilities. Functions such as a calendar, appointments page, e–business card, calculator and currency converter are all featured on a large animated display capable of showing up to seven lines of text. If a break from work is needed, the S35i comes complete with games and a ring tone melody composer. To meet the demand for information and entertainment features on mobile handsets, Siemens has launched the C35i, the company’s first „consumer class" phone with an integrated WAP 1.1 browser. The C35i is predicted to break all sales records for Siemens. „Our policy is that mobile access to Internet should not be restricted to high end mobile phones", said Peter Zapf, President, Siemens Communication Devices. „Siemens believes that all consumers want to enjoy the benefits of accessing information on the Internet, from share prices to entertainment, on affordable products." Designed to appeal to the increasingly sophisticated age sector of 16 – 30, the handset includes exciting new entertainment features such as „Picture Messaging" and „Calling Faces". Picture Messaging allows the user to send fun and emotive images instead or in addition to text messages via SMS. Calling Faces adds further emotional value to every call by allowing you to add amusing and personal face icons to important names in your address book. When someone rings your mobile phone, the screen will flash with your chosen face. Additional entertainment features include games and a ring tone melody composer. Users are able to personalise their menu level, user profile and menu format to meet their individual needs. For example the menu level can be set to „fast" if simple tasks such as making and receiving calls is all that is required. Alternatively, more sophisticated users may choose the „complete" setting to use all the phone’s features. Furthermore text can be enlarged to just one line on the display, aiding and simplifying the display for those with poor eyesight. Weighing 110 grams, the C35I, available in six colours, has a standby time of up to 180 hours** and a talk time of up to 300 minutes**. With features such as stopwatch, currency converter, silent alert, clock with date and time stamp and calculator, the C35i is set to raise the standard of mobile phones for predominantly private and social use. On sale in April both the C35i and S35i are dual band GSM 900 and 1800 for roaming within the GSM network, and have triple rate vocoders for superior speech quality. „Siemens is aiming to increase its sales in mobile phones within two years sixfold to 60 million units by 2001. The C35i and S35i represent both the beginning of our programme to achieve these targets, and a very exciting year for the consumer as we continue to raise the standard in technically superior, desirable mobile phones," said Zapf. Notes to editors: * ‘Intelligent Typing’ is synonymous for Tegic T9 text input method. ‘Intelligent Typing’ allows the user to write messages simply and quickly via the keypad. Siemens' "Intelligent Typing" uses a dictionary to recognise probable words being entered via the mobile phone keypad. ** Actual performance is dependent on network environment. *** The required hands free headset with PTT, (Push To Talk) is available from Siemens Original Accessories.
